Description
This willow celtic cross is made to celebrate the feast day of St Brigid of Kildare – Ireland’s patron saint alongside St Patrick and St Columba. Traditionally these crosses were made from rushes, willow or straw on the night before her feast day on February 1st. Crosses placed over doors and windows are said to bring protection against fire, lightning, illness and evil. Although I can’t offer any guarantees on those, these crosses mark a celebration of a mighty woman. Said to have founded a school of art which included metal work and illumination (the creation of books).
St Brigid is the patron saint of healers, poets, blacksmiths, livestock and dairy workers.
The pre Christian gaelic tradition of Imbolc is also celebrated on the 1 st February when the return of Spring as the light returns.
Each cross is 19 – 22 cm across and comes wrapped in tissue.
Please choose if you would like green or copper coloured wire.
The set of 2 comes with one of each colour – one for you, one for a friend.
Postage is included in the price.
The willow is farmed and harvested in Somerset. Buying products made from natural materials such as these is a positive way to buy more sustainably.
